Welcome

Welcome to NIU's NSF ADVANCE Catalyst grant project. "Navigate, Balance, and Retain: Developing Success in Mid-Career For Female STEM Faculty" is a two-year collaboration between NIU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and College of Engineering. We are examining factors affecting the career progress of tenured female faculty members in science, mathematics, and engineering to prepare us for large-scale institutional transformation.

The first year of our project consists of a self-study, including a survey of all faculty members in the two colleges, to be followed by focus groups and individual interviews.  Combined with institutional data, this information will help us identify barriers to career progress for our target population.  In the second year, we will review both written and unwritten policies and work-life balance issues in order to design mentoring and peer support programs as well as to recommend changes in university policies and practices.

Our Catalyst grant is one of about ten such grants given by the National Science Foundation as part of its ADVANCE program, which is designed to facilitate the recruitment and retention of female faculty in STEM fields nationwide.  Our study is distinctive in its inclusion of the national laboratories and its review of unwritten policies.  For additional information, please email us at catalyst@niu.edu
