Band Ensembles

The Wind Ensemble is the most select wind and percussion group on campus. The ensemble specializes in chamber wind and soloistic wind literature for eight to 50 players. Membership in the Wind Ensemble is open to any NIU student who qualifies through audition.

The Wind Symphony is a select concert band designed for in-depth study of major literature for winds and percussion, the Wind Symphony performs literature of the highest quality from the repertory of both traditional and contemporary compositional styles. Members develop a deeper sensitivity not only toward outstanding musicianship, but with regard to historical style, performance practices, and aesthetics. Membership in the Wind Symphony is open to any NIU student who qualifies through audition.

The All-University Band is a unique organization in that it is open to all students, regardless of their academic major. Rehearsing only on Tuesday evenings, this band provides a great outlet for those players wanting to play traditional band literature without a large time commitment. This ensemble is offered most semesters.

The Huskie Marching Band is a select organization whose mission is threefold: To Entertain, To Support and To Educate.

The Huskie Band performs at all university home football games, at select away games and at post-season bowl games. The band entertains the stadium crowd while both on the field and in the stands and entertains crowds at select parades and university events.

The band also contributes to the education of members who may become band directors. In short, students in the Huskie Marching Band have been "defining collegiate life in DeKalb since 1899." The Huskie Marching Band is open to all students at NIU. The marching band membership includes musicians, the Silverettes (dance line) and the Color Guard (flags). The Huskie Marching Band is an official ensemble of the School of Music, and students enrolled in marching band receive academic credit.

The festive and spirited atmosphere that is a part of NIU Basketball and Volleyball in the state-of-the-art Convocation Center would not be possible without the contributions made by the Huskie Pep Band. The Huskie Pep Band performs at all men's and women's basketball home games, at home matches of the women's volleyball team, as well as at conference and national tournaments.

Membership in the Huskie Pep Band is open to any NIU student who has high school instrumental experience, but an audition is required for new members.

Rehearsals are held one night a week.

The Huskie Pep Band is an official ensemble of the School of Music, and students receive academic credit for participation.
