Auditions

Undergraduate Level

All prospective undergraduates must perform the following:

  1. one snare drum solo or etude - rudimental OR concert (not both)
    1. rudimental suggestions: Pratt, Tompkins, Wilcoxon
    2. concert suggestions: Cirone, Delécluse, Masson
  2. one keyboard percussion solo or etude (4-mallet solo is preferred)
    1. two-mallet suggestions: Goldenberg, G.H. Green, Abe, Bach, Musser
    2. four-mallet suggestions: Zeltsman Intermediate Solo Collection, Stout, Burritt
  3. Two-mallet sight reading
  4. one timpani solo or etude
    1. suggested method books etudes: Carroll, Hochrainer, Delécluse
    2. other suggested repertoire: Carter etudes, solos by Carroll, Beck, Bergamo, etc.
  5. Solo or etude in one other area of applicants choice:
    1. multiple percussion
    2. world percussion
    3. drum set
      1. Demonstration of styles (to be selected from the following list):
        1. Jazz Ballad
        2. Medium swing
        3. Uptempo swing
        4. Brazilian Styles
        5. Afro-Cuban Styles
      2. FOR UNDERGRADUATE JAZZ MAJORS ONLY - all of the above, plus:
        1. Big band chart sight reading
        2. "Melodic drum solo"
          1. interpret a well-known jazz standard in the following format:
            1. head
            2. 2 choruses of improvised solo
            3. head out
  6. Diagnostic aural skills and physical coordination
  7. Interview

      IMPORTANT NOTES:

    1. AUDITIONS MUST BE DONE IN PERSON. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS MAY REQUEST EXCEPTION.
    2. PLEASE BRING TWO COPIES OF YOUR MUSIC FOR THE ADJUDICATION PANEL.

Graduate Level (classical percussion)

  1. All prospective graduate students should be prepared to perform senior recital level literature in each of the following areas:
    1. snare drum
    2. two-mallet keyboard percussion
    3. four-mallet keyboard percussion
    4. timpani
  2. One standard orchestral excerpt on each of the following:
    1. keyboard percussion
    2. snare drum
    3. cymbals
    4. timpani
  3. In addition, applicant must also choose to perform one or more selections representing the following:
    1. multiple percussion
    2. world percussion instruments
    3. drum set (see details in undergrad description above)
  4. Two-mallet sight reading
  5. Diagnostic aural skills and physical coordination
  6. Interview

Graduate Level (jazz studies)

All prospective Jazz Studies graduate students should be prepared to perform the following:

  1. Snare Drum Etude
  2. Vibraphone: Two- or Four-mallet jazz standard
  3. Two-mallet sightreading of a melody in the jazz idiom
  4. Drumset
    1. Demonstration of Styles
      1. Jazz Ballad
      2. Medium swing
      3. Uptempo swing
      4. Brazilian Styles
      5. Afro-Cuban Styles
    2. Big band chart sight reading
    3. "Melodic drum solo" - interpret a well-known jazz standard in the following format:
      1. head
      2. 2 choruses of improvised solo
      3. head out
    4. Transcription Performance (please provide recording on CD or MP3 player!):
      1. Play along with original recording of a significant jazz drummer (see examples below):
