At first glance, you may agree pie is a baked dish with a pastry dough and filling. However, icebox pies are not baked, pumpkin pies can taste just as good with a graham cracker crust, and hand pies come in all kinds of shapes and sizes.

Pies have an iconic place in American culture. They have a form, filling, and function, providing a slice of satisfaction with their flaky crust, tasty filling, and seductive aroma. But one may ask, is it pies themselves or the associated memories that mean so much?

Join us as we dig into the deliciously complex experience of pie and serve up a slice of history. Let's delve into Pie's physical construction and social function in America to answer the question, "what is pie?"
