2016 Money Smart Week Events - By Date

Different collaborative representatives, coalition members, and members of the community will be presenting on different topics throughout DeKalb, LaSalle, and Lee Counties during the week of April 23-30th. ALL PROGRAMMING IS FREE and covers many facets of personal finance from establishing a budget to first time home buying, estate planning, couponing, and much more.

All community members are welcome to attend many of the sessions. Some events might be listed as private. These are sessions that are scheduled throughout April, as requested by the organization, and are not open to the public. If you are interested in having an industry professional present to your organization, please contact the Money Smart Week Steering Committee and we will be happy to assist you. 


Pre-Work Shop Sessions

This year, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago is allowing K-12 programs, as well as Colleges and Universities, to host Money Smart Week events for the entire month of April. This is to accommodate for the official week of events being so late in the month, and so close to the end of the school year. Northern Illinois University, Kishwaukee Community College, and the K-12 School Districts in DeKalb, LaSalle, and Lee counties are proud to be presenting a variety of both public and private events to their communities.

It’s the Money Smart Week Big Read – a statewide celebration of financial literacy just for kids. From 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 23, the DeKalb Public Library will host a story time and craft that will feature the statewide Big Read book, Start Saving Henry by Nancy Carlson. Gavin Wilson from Country Financial will read stories and bring along his puppet friend to help! Following the story time, the children can enjoy a fun money craft to take home, along with a bookmark. The first 15 children to arrive at the event will receive a free copy of the book! Kids' Big Read: LaSalle

A special event of books, games and crafts, especially for kids aged 5 through 8 years and their families providing opportunities to learn about money and financial literacy! From a picture book read-aloud of Start Saving, Henry by Nancy Carlson (first 15 families to register, and in attendance, will receive a free copy of the book to take home) and “shopping” at the Sweet Shoppe where kids will use pretend money to “purchase” a selection of candies while learning to recognize U.S. coins and currency and improve accuracy in counting money to creating their own custom ceramic bank to take home as a special reminder and encouragement for kids to become savers. Also, all kids will receive a free book selection from First Book. Free program, open to the public. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Instead of locating and taking objects, players leave proof they found information about personal finance topics every college student should understand.
