The memorial boards and other outdoor memorials have been removed from MLK Commons in order to appropriately preserve them in our University Archives. The campus community is encouraged to visit the new temporary Memorial Center in Altgeld Hall.
NIU’s Regional History Center/University Archives has the mission of preserving and documenting the history of the university, including the tragic Feb. 14 event.
Although staff members already have been working with various departments on campus, they need to expand their outreach by asking faculty, staff, students and the larger university community to share their items and to spread the word.
No item is too small to be included in the archives, including e-mails, correspondence, poems, official documents, class projects, photographs and videotape.
For more information, or to share, contact the Regional History Center/University Archives in Room 400 of Founders Memorial Library or call (815) 753-1779 during regular office hours.
A new office has been created to provide long-term assistance to those most affected by the Feb. 14 shootings in Cole Hall. The Office of Support and Advocacy serves as a centralized resource for all students, faculty and staff who were in Cole Hall at the time of the tragedy. The office also will serve as a point of contact for families of deceased students. The office will open for business Thursday, April 3. It is located in Gilbert Hall, Room B123, and can be reached by calling (815) 753-0490.
The Peace Room, a place for reflection, is open everyday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. next to the Illinois Room in the Holmes Student Center. The room is sponsored by the Association of Campus Religious Organizations.
Students inquiring about the status of their belongings should contact Public Safety's Lost and Found Office 815-753-9690. Once items are eligible for release, students will be contacted.
Information on the Illinois Crime Victims Compensation Fund is available on the Attorney General's website.
Campus climate surveys are suspended until further notice.
