School of Theatre and Dance-sponsored iNSeRT presents ‘Agnes of God’

DeKalb, Ill. — The all-student theater production company of Northern Illinois University’s School of Theatre and Dance, iNSeRT (Northern Illinois Student Repertory Theatre), presents the powerful and poignant drama “Agnes of God” in the Stevens Building Corner Theatre from Thursday, April 22, through Saturday, April 24.

Directed by Katrina Johnson, the play features acting by Erin Edwards, Amalia Mathewson and Diana Rego in the three character roles. Edwards and Johnson will be making their final performances on the NIU stage before graduating with BAs in theater studies this May.

“Agnes of God” is the science-versus-faith story of a novice nun who gives birth to a newborn that is found dead at the bottom of a wastepaper basket in a convent. The nun claims she was unaware of the pregnancy and that that child was the result of a virgin conception.

Court-ordered psychiatrist Dr. Livingstone (Rego) is sent to the convent to determine the mental well-being of Sister Agnes (Edwards), who has lost her baby. Mother Superior (Mathewson), however, does not appreciate the doctor’s atheist perspective and is radically opposed to the implications and direction that the investigation takes.

Raised in a Catholic household, Johnson believes that the play is relevant for both those of faith and without. “… (It) tackles major themes of religion versus psychiatry that everyone can relate to. It’s heartwarming and heartbreaking all at once.”

“Agnes of God” is a play that Johnson has waited for a long time to produce. “I couldn’t have asked for a better cap on my college career. The show expresses everything I’ve learned and everything I hope to do in the future.”

The iNSeRT theatre company is composed and operated entirely by students training at the NIU’s School of Theatre and Dance.

Curtain for all three performances of “Agnes of God” is at 7:30 p.m. and will be performed in the Stevens Building Corner Theatre on the DeKalb campus. Tickets are $3 general admission and available only at the door.
