Early this morning, two male students were in an altercation that resulted in one student allegedly shooting the other in the leg outside Stevenson North Residence Hall. The NIU Department of Public Safety believes this to be an isolated incident between two individuals. The victim’s injuries are non-life-threatening, and he was transported to Kishwaukee Community Hospital for treatment. The suspect fled on foot from the scene and was apprehended by NIU Police within minutes of the incident. As a precautionary measure, the campus was briefly locked down and the “all clear” has been issued. Normal operations have resumed and classes are meeting as scheduled.
NIU implemented a variety of emergency campus alert mechanisms that included emergency text message notification, campus-alert postings on the university’s website and campus-wide email alerts. The use of a variety of emergency alert mechanisms provided redundancy in communication and are essential tools in NIU’s emergency management protocols. Information hotlines and counseling services for students, faculty and staff have been posted, manned and are in operation. The NIU website is continuously updated as information becomes available.
NIU’s Student Affairs Division is manning an information hotline for parents and students. Telephone numbers are on the NIU homepage. Counselors are on site in Stevenson residence hall, as well as at the NIU Counseling Center in the Campus Life building. Student Affairs staff are on site with the victim and his family at Kishwaukee Hospital.
It is so unfortunate that violence continues to plague college campuses, houses of worship, malls and public venues across the country. I want to reiterate that NIU is a safe campus. We are a large community, almost 30,000 students, faculty and staff. Our campus is larger than many towns, cities and villages. Regrettably, incidents such as this can occur anywhere, at any time, as we know all too well. We continue to remain vigilant to provide a safe and secure university community for our students, faculty and staff in which to live and learn.
We will continue to keep you updated throughout our website as additional details become available.
