Central Receiving

Central Receiving is located in the south end of the Dorland Building and acts as NIU's central location for:

  • Accepting daily shipments for the NIU campus
  • Processing all parcels and preparing them for shipment to university departments
  • Providing temporary storage and viewing area for surplus furniture
  • Shipping return items to vendors

Return Procedure

In order to return an item to a vendor via Central Stores, a shipping ticket is required. In order to obtain a shipping ticket, the department must call Procurement Services (753-1671) and provide the following information:

  • Vendor Name and Address
  • Purchase Order Number (if applicable) the item was purchased on
  • Item Description
  • Reason for Return
  • Preferred Method of Shipment
  • Value of Item

Attach a copy of the shipping ticket to the item to be returned. When Central Stores receives a copy of the shipping ticket from Procurement Services, we will pick up the package from your department. If the item is too large to be transported easily, we will call and arrange for a pickup by the movers.

Personal Purchases Notice

The university's Central Receiving and Delivery operations function to receive and deliver items purchased with university funds for university use. As such, personal purchases by faculty and staff should not be shipped to the university as an alternative to an individual's home address.

When a personal purchase is delivered to Central Receiving a notice will be attached and sent to the addressee along with the package. The notice will inform the addressee that any future personal purchases will be refused at Central Receiving and returned to the vendor. Once an addressee has received this notice, all future personal purchases , regardless of vendor, will be refused.

Any packages which cannot be clearly identified by the address label may be opened in an effort to identify the addressee, or may be refused and returned.
