Objective/Goal

Utilize cutting edge technology in the field of high-powered direct diode laser cladding for research and improving industry capacities.

Approach

Working closely with partners and keeping up to date with the latest developments in lasers to see how they can be applied to the field of cladding.

Benefits

Cost reduction by reducing energy consumption and amount of material required to perform cladding.

Tasks

Finalize development of Power Measurement Calorimetric System capable of directly measuring net energy absorbed during a simulated welding/cladding process.

Progress/Achievements

Determined one of the most important 100 new inventions in the world as determined by an international panel of scientists in 2004 and 2005.

Commercialization/Next Steps

Working with Alion to promote development and utilize it for current applications.
