About Us

Prism is the LGBT student-run organization at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL. Since 1970, Prism has worked to educate Huskies about the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and ally communities of NIU and give students a supportive atmosphere to share and grow in their common interests.

A safe place for everyone

The mission of Prism is to provide a support network and positive social outlet for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and ally communities of Northern Illinois University and the surrounding area. Prism fosters a safe, open, and respectful community for all of its members, no matter where they fall on the spectrum.

Community gatherings

Community gatherings take place at 9:00 PM on Wednesdays. The location of these gatherings and what we have planned varies from week to week, so connect with us to stay in the loop! Here's how:

Getting involved: the E-Board

Prism's E-Board manages and plans community gatherings, outings, fundraisers, the Pride Letter, publicity, and more. The E-Board holds open planning sessions every Monday at 9:00 PM in the LGBT Resource Center at Holmes Student Center, Room 706. Elections for positions on the E-Board take place at the beginning of the fall semester.

Even if you're not a member of the E-Board, you can still get involved! Prism has three committees for event planning, publicity, and fundraising. During the year, members of the community can take part in Prism planning by joining these committees. Contact a committee chair to learn more.
