DeKalb, Ill.--The NIU College of Law community gathered to celebrate the life of the late Professor Larry Schlam at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago on Monday, April 20, 2015. NIU Law alumni, students, faculty and staff joined with Larry’s friends and family to offer tribute to a man who left a profound impact on generations of students and colleagues. It was an evening filled with elements that defined his life: laughter, song, and honest conversation.

The event was emceed by NIU Law alumnus Jason Christopoulos (’11), who befriended Larry during his time as a student, participated in his doo wop singing group the Schlamtones, and continued to remain close with him over the years. Dean Jennifer Rosato Perea presented a stirring tribute and explained the significance of holding the event at Buddy Guy’s restaurant, as Larry had famously represented Guy at one point in time and was a huge fan of the blues legend’s music.  We were entertained by the melodic sounds of Chicago jazz musician Skinny Williams throughout the evening.  Memorials were also offered by Professor Schlam’s daughter, Lisa, and his longtime friend and colleague Professor Lorraine Schmall. Perhaps most moving, however, were the singing performances from the latest members of the Schlamtones, all current students at the College of Law.

Professor Schlam is one of the few people to have had the unique distinction of having an impact on every class at the NIU College of Law. He was one of the original 28 faculty members of the law school when it was established by Lewis University in 1974 and then taken over by Northern Illinois University in 1979. Larry spent nearly 50 years in the legal profession with over 40 of those years at NIU Law. He passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at the age of 72.
