NIU College of Law Ranked as one of the
Ten Most Underrated Law Schools

July 2, 2015

DeKalb, Ill.--Northern Illinois University College of Law was listed in a recently published study, reported originally in Bloomberg News, and picked up by Crain’s Chicago Business, as one of the ten most underrated law schools in the country when using median LSAT scores and employment outcomes.

The study was released this week by University of North Carolina School of Law professor Alfred Brophy, who told Bloomberg that his rankings were meant to help potential law students narrow their law school decision using simplified, yet foundational, metrics.

“What this ranking does is reveal how careful students need to be, especially in looking at employment outcomes. The job market is so incredibly competitive coming out of law school, you want to make sure you are going to the best school and getting the best value for your money," said Brophy.

Brophy’s methodology entailed discerning the difference between his own detailed law school rankings and the similar school rankings announced annually by U.S. News & World Report. Schools that showed the largest positive differences were considered his “most underrated” schools. NIU Law was ranked 9th on the list of the most underrated schools when using LSAT scores and employment outcomes to make comparisons.

NIU Law Dean Mark Cordes affirms the findings. “Graduates considering law school today are clearly focused on return on their investment. Professor Brophy’s analysis places a premium on employment prospects and his results further confirm that NIU Law's focus on career success and job placement is properly targeted.”
