DeKalb, Ill--Two NIU College of Law teams excelled this semester at the national moot court competition held as part of the 18th Annual National Latina/o Law Student Association (NLLSA) Conference. Seventeen teams from around the country participated in the competition held at the University of Texas at Austin.  The NIU team of third-year student Irakere Picón and second-year student Patricia Donahue earned the highest score of any team during the preliminary rounds of the tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals. Irakere Picón was singled out by the judges as the best oral advocate for the competition’s preliminary rounds. NIU’s second team, composed of second-year law students Danesa Tamayo and Brian Cunningham, also impressed the judges and scored very well during the preliminary rounds.

“I am so proud of all four of our competitors,” stated Professor Robert L. Jones,” who coached both teams. “All four of them were outstanding and competed very well as teammates. Irakere, in particular, was fantastic.  I am so happy and proud for him. He deserved the judge’s recognition as the best advocate at the competition. I was also very impressed with Brian, Patti, and Danesa, our second-year students. NIU can expect great things from them in the future.”

Third-year student Irakere Picón, pictured with Professor Jones, was named the best oral advocate for the National LLSA Moot Court competition's preliminary rounds.
