Professor Yolanda King has written an article for Law360 on a major tattoo copyright infringement lawsuit regarding the NBA 2K16 video game which may finally go to trial. The article continues Professor King's pioneering work on the subject of tattoos as intellectual property.

Professor King Interviewed by VICE Sports Regarding High-Profile Copyright Infringement Case

Professor Yolanda King was interviewed by VICE Sports magazine regarding her article entitled “The Challenges ‘Facing’ Copyright Protection for Tattoos”. Her article has garnered the attention of the sports world as it was cited in a recent case brought against a video game manufacturer for tattoos displayed on several high-profile NBA players portrayed in a video game, including LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.

A Yolanda King article entitled “The Challenges ‘Facing’ Copyright Protection for Tattoos” has been cited in a case against a video game manufacturer - claiming the tattoos displayed on several high-profile NBA players portrayed in a video game infringe on a company's copyright.

Professor Yolanda King Speaks on Intellectual Property Panel

Professor Yolanda King will be part of "What is Intellectual Property? When to Patent, Trademark or Copyright," a panel discussion on legalities and information regarding engineering and project management as it pertains to intellectual property. The event will be held at Northern Illinois University's EIGERlab in Rockford, IL on Tuesday, February 9th, 2016. The panel will also include Jeff Dixon, attorney at law, Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP; Matt Mondek, professional engineer and holder of an MBA, BSME, CPM and five U.S. patents; and Eric Waltmire, patent attorney, Erickson Law Group, PC.

Professor King to Give Presentations Across the Country

Professor Yolanda King is set to begin a busy fall semester, sharing her recent work in law schools spanning the nation. On September 29, 2015, Professor King will present (via Skype) her article, The Inadvisability of Nonuniformity in the Licensing of Cover Songs, to Michigan State University College of Law’s Intellectual Property Seminar Series. She will also present that article on October 16, 2015 at Belmont Law Review’s symposium titled “Entertainment Law and Music Business in Transition” in Nashville, Tennessee. And on October 2, 2015, Professor King will participate as a panelist in the “Copyright Outside the Box” symposium at Columbia Law School in New York City, New York.

Professor Yolanda King Draws Heavy Media Attention from her Work on IP and Copyright Law

Professor Yolanda King has been featured prominently in online and print publications for her continuing, innovative work on intellectual property and copyright law. She was featured in the August 10, 2015 edition of the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, wherein she discussed her work on tattoo scholarship and upcoming presentations on copyright matters. That article lead to a press release on the NIU Law website and in NIU Today as well as distribution in numerous local media outlets.

Professor King's Work on Tattoo Copyrights Inspires Article

Professor Yolanda King was the subject of a March 12, 2015 article on the NIU Newsroom site. The article deals with King's ongoing, novel work on copyright law and how tattoo art meets requirements for copyright protection.

Professor King Sits on Panel Discussing Innovative Teaching of IP Law

Professor Yolanda King was a panelist at the First Annual Mosaic Conference: Diverse Voices in IP Scholarship on Sunday, November 16, 2014. The conference took place from November 14-16 at Marquette University Law School in Milwaukee, WI. The panel was entitled "Teaching Intellectual Property from a Progressive Perspective." Professor King discussed incorporation of African American guest speakers into her Entertainment Law course.

"This approach provides unique perspectives to my students that they would not otherwise learn from the casebooks or other non-minority guest speakers," Professor King says. "In addition, these guest speakers not only reveal the importance of diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry but also open my students' eyes to different communities and cultures."

Professor Yolanda King continues to advance her groundbreaking study of tattoos and intellectual property law. She presented her article "The Enforcement Challenges for Tattoo Copyrights" to the DuPage County Bar Association on Wednesday, November 12, 2014.

Professor Yolanda King Attends Legal Conference

On April 4-5, 2014, Professor Yolanda King attended the 24th Annual Meeting of the Midwestern People of Color Legal Scholarship Conference at Indiana Tech Law School in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

Professor King Speaking on Continuing Issues in Intellectual Property

Professor Yolanda King has been very active recently in presenting her scholarly work on the subject of intellectual property law as it pertains to tattoos.  She presented her article "The Enforcement Challenges for Tattoo Copyrights" at the Chicago Junior Faculty Workshop at Valparaiso University's Chicago location on Friday, February 7, 2014.

Additionally, Professor King will present her article "The Challenges 'Facing' Copyright Protection for Tattoos" to the DuPage County Bar Association on Tuesday, February 18.

Professor Yolanda King served as a panelist on "Careers in the Law" at Walter Payton College Prep on April 25, 2013.  She discussed her career as an intellectual property attorney in Chicago and the transition from practice to law teaching.

Professor Yolanda King Honored as Outstanding Professor of the Year

On June 8, 2012, Professor Yolanda King received the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award from the NIU College of Law Alumni Council.  She was presented with her award during the 8th Annual NIU Law Golf Outing and Awards Dinner. Professor King was honored for her devotion to the advancement of the law school and her outstanding commitment to enriching the lives of those in the NIU Law community.  

Professor Yolanda King Speaks at National Summit of Black Women Lawyers

On April 13, 2012, Professor Yolanda King participated in a panel as part of the Black Women Lawyers' Association of Greater Chicago's 2012 National Summit of Black Women Lawyers. The Summit was entitled "Redefining Our Journey," and took place at the Hyatt Regency Chicago on the Riverwalk. The event was in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of BWLA.  Professor King was a member of BWLA during her legal practice. She was part of a panel on pursuing academic appointments.
