Professor King Interviewed by VICE Sports
Regarding High-Profile Copyright Infringement Case

NIU College of Law Associate Professor Yolanda M. King was interviewed by VICE Sports magazine on February 9, 2016 regarding her article entitled “The Challenges ‘Facing’ Copyright Protection for Tattoos” (92 Or. L. Rev. 129 (2013)).

The article has been cited in a recent case brought against a video game manufacturer - claiming the tattoos displayed on several high-profile NBA players portrayed in a video game, including LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, infringe on a company's copyright.

VICE Sports chronicles sports and the role of sports in society – publishing original, reported, and researched stories and videos that take readers inside the lives of athletes on and off the field.

Professor King, who was recently profiled in the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin feature entitled “NIU Professor Becomes Expert on IP Tattoo Law,” has become a “go-to” resource for her thought leadership in the area of Intellectual Property Law. She has written two articles on the copyrightability of tattoos and the enforcement of tattoo copyrights, with a third article on the application of right of publicity law to tattoos to be published this Spring, and has spoken on the topic as part of a recent symposium at the Columbia Law School entitled “Copyright: Outside the Box,” part of the school’s annual series of copyright symposia.
