Shaina Kalanges ('15) Publishes Brief in KCBA Publication

Recent NIU College of Law graduate Shaina Kalanges ('15) has written a brief that appeared in Bar Briefs, an official publication of the Kane County (IL) Bar Association, in its Veterans Day edition on November 11, 2015.

The brief details the case of Mike Russo, a veteran of the United States Marine Corps who served in Iraq, and a "mishandled local ordinance violation (that) resulted in a series of legal issues, including criminal charges across two Michigan municipalities." Russo was unable to afford an attorney to defend himself and had difficulty with the legal process, owing to his suffering from PTSD, posits Kalanges. At one point, he also lost the ability to see his two children.

Kalanges quotes fellow 2015 NIU Law graduate John Joyce in the article. Kalanges and Joyce presented a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program on the brief at the Kane County Bar Association building and will be doing a similar presentation soon for the Chicago Bar Association.
