Legal Writing Department Presents at Central States Regional Legal Writing Conference

On September 15, 2017, Professors Jeanna Hunter, Sandra Kupelian, Meredith Stange, and Jay Streitz presented at the Central States Regional Legal Writing conference at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. Their presentation was titled, "Exit Laughing: Ideas for a More Fun, Productive Classroom."

Stange Presents at ALWD Legal Writing Conference

July 19-21, 2017, Legal Writing Program Director Meredith Stange attended the Association of Legal Writing Directors (ALWD) Biennial Legal Writing Conference titled “Acknowledging Lines: Talking About What Unites and Divides Us.” The conference was held at the University of Minnesota Law School in Minneapolis, MN. 

On July 20th, Professor Stange was a facilitator for the two small group breakout sessions following Professor Rachel Godsil’s presentation titled “Addressing the Effects of Implicit Bias and Racial Anxiety in Law School Dynamics,” and Professor Erin Kelly’s presentation titled “Encouraging Diversity and Creating Community:  Research and Reflections.” The purpose of these breakout sessions was to encourage members of the ALWD community to discuss the presentations in the context of the legal writing, law school and ALWD communities as well as to reflect on their personal experiences. Then on July 21st Professor Stange, along with Joel Atlas and Robin Boyle, presented on a discussion panel titled “Teaching Ideas: Analysis and Writing.”

Professor Meredith Stange Featured in Legal Writing Institute Newsletter

NIU College of Law Legal Writing Program Director Meredith Stange is one of the three Legal Writing professors featured in the February 2017 issue of LWI LivesLWI Lives is a publication from the Legal Writing Institute that introduces readers to the personal side of Legal Writing professionals while also highlighting their approaches to teaching and their profession. The article on Professor Stange talks about a range of topics, from her love of all things Harry Potter to her fondness for the phrase, "So what?" 

Professor Meredith Stange Publishes Article in AALS Newsletter

NIU College of Law Legal Writing Program Director Meredith Stange recently published an article in the summer 2016 edition of The Learning Curve, the newsletter for the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Section on Academic Support.

Professor Stange's article, entitled "'Yo, Prof!' is Not the Proper Way to Address Me," discusses the addition of a status email article assignment to the NIU College of Law Legal Writing curriculum to assist students in drafting professional correspondence.

Professor Stange Participates in SALT Conference Panel

NIU Law Legal Writing Program Director Meredith Stange presented at the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT) Conference at The John Marshall Law School in Chicago on October 1, 2016. The theme of this conference was "From the Classroom to the Community: Teaching and Advancing Social Justice." Professor Stange spoke on a panel called "Social Justice and the Legal Writing Classroom."

This panel was moderated by Professor Mark Wojcik from The John Marshall Law School and also included Professors Luellen Curry from Wake Forest University School of Law; J. Lyn Entrikin from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock; William H. Bowen School of Law, Stephanie Roberts Hartung from Northeastern University School of Law; Karen Mika from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law; and Mary Bowman from Seattle University.

Stange Presents at Central States Legal Writing Conference

NIU Law Legal Writing Program Director Meredith Stange presented at the Central States Legal Writing Conference at Saint Louis University School of Law on September 26, 2015. Her presentation was titled “Entering Uncharted Waters: Using an Upper Level Writing for Practice Class to Reinforce 1L Writing Concepts.”

Stange and Hunter Present at AASE Conference

On May 27th, 2015, NIU Law Legal Writing Program Director Meredith Stange and Academic Success Program Director Jeanna Hunter presented at the Association of Academic Support Educators' (AASE) Conference at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago. The presentation was titled "Red Rover, Red Rover, Send Applicant A Right Over: ASP and Admissions Working Hand-in-Hand to Boost the Probability of Student Success."

Instructor Meredith Stange Presents at Legal Writing Workshop

On Friday, December 12th, 2014, Meredith Stange presented at the Legal Writing Institute's (LWI) One-Day Workshop, Preparing Practice Ready Students, at Southern Illinois University School of Law. Her presentation was titled, " is an Inappropriate Email Address for Professional Correspondence: Why NIU Law Added a Status Email Assignment to First Year Legal Writing."

Stange is a member of the Legal Writing Institute's Plagiarism Committee (2006-08, 2012-14), its Diversity Initiatives Committee (2010-12), and is currently a member of its Idea Bank Committee as well as its ad hoc committee to update the LWI website.

Legal Writing Instructor Meredith Stange Publishes Primer for First-Year Students

Meredith Stange has had her article, "Law Students Lie and Other Practical Information for First-Year Students," published in the Fall 2012 edition of The Law Teacher, a joint publication of the Gonzaga and Washburn University Schools of Law.  The article addresses common misconceptions and dispenses valuable advice regarding the entry into law school for a first-year student.  Stange's entry begins on page 18 of the publication.
