Marishonta Wilkerson (’15) was introduced by Shawn Kasserman, president of the Illinois Bar Foundation (IBF), at the Foundation’s annual gala held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago on Friday, October 16, 2015. Marishonta, who was awarded a 2015 Post Graduate Legal Fellowship from the Illinois Bar Foundation, was invited to speak about her fellowship, goals, and the important relationships she has already established with her clients. During her one-year fellowship, she is working at the Northern Illinois University College of Law school’s Zeke Giorgi Legal Clinic in Rockford, Illinois where she handles domestic violence, divorce, and estate planning cases for people who otherwise are not able to afford legal representation. The IBF, which is the charitable arm of the Illinois State Bar Association, launched its Fellowship Program in 2014 and is partnering with select Illinois law schools to fund public interest jobs for recent graduates.

Marishonta and her fellowship have drawn a great deal of attention from local news outlets. This includes the Chicago Tribune; Chicago's Daily Herald; ISBA Now, the official publication of the Illinois State Bar Association; Chicago Lawyer magazine; the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin; the Daily Chronicle of DeKalb, IL; the Oswego (IL) Patch; the News-Gazette of central Illinois; and the Aurora, IL entry on AmericanTowns.com.
