NIU Law Student Nicholas Atwood
Publishes Article for West's Education Law Reporter

Nicholas AtwoodThird-year NIU College of Law student Nicholas Atwood has published an article* in the January 2016 edition of West's Education Law Reporter with NIU Associate Professor of Education Administration Christine Kiracofe.

The article, entitled "Giving Kids a (Required) Shot: Mandatory Vaccination Laws and Exceptions for Public K-12 Students in the United States," addresses how a growing segment of the population with school-aged children have elected not to vaccinate their children. Some parents opt out of vaccines for religious or medical reasons, others on philosophical grounds. The article reviews the statutory mechanisms for providing vaccination exemptions to objecting parents nationwide.

Atwood is an involved and engaged student. He is treasurer of the Student Bar Association and a successful moot court competitor. Atwood was part of the NIU Law team that recently advanced to the quarterfinals of the Midwestern Regional Jessup International Moot Court Competition, and was a co-champion of NIU Law's second-year student mock trial competition in 2014.

Professor Kiracofe is an adjunct professor at the College of Law in addition to her duties for the College of Education. She teaches Education Law and Legal Aspects of School Business Management and has authored more than 25 articles, books, and book chapters with her work being cited in law reviews, education finance literature, and court documents.
