Two student teams representing Northern Illinois University College of Law participated in the ABA Law Student Division Negotiation Competition Midwest Regional at Ohio State University on November 12th and 13th, 2016. The NIU team of Jeremy Sentman and Wendi Werren finished in second place of the twenty-four teams in the regional competition. As part of the competition, Northern Law competed with several schools that are nationally ranked for their Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and negotiation programs. The two NIU College of Law teams marked the return of Northern Law to the ABA Negotiation Competition for the first time in many years.

As the runners-up, Sentman and Werren beat teams from eleven other law schools, including the four other Illinois law schools participating in the regional. Sentman and Werren impressed the judges and their competitors with their preparation, teamwork, negotiation skills and advocacy for their clients. The other Northern Law team of Abby Peretz and Kelsey Stangebye also performed well, besting the two highest-ranked Illinois law schools in the competition.

This year, the ABA Negotiation Competition focused on business negotiations. Over the course of the competition, the Northern Law teams represented corporate and individual clients in typical business negotiations.

Professor Alan H. Boudreau, who coached the NIU College of Law negotiation teams this year, has judged the ABA Negotiation Competition in the past. “There was a strong group of competitors in this competition,” Professor Boudreau said. “I am exceptionally proud of how well our Northern Law students performed in the competition. Seeing Wendi, Jeremy, Kelsey and Abby compete against some of the best schools in the midwest reminded me once again how talented the College of Law's students are.”
