23rd Annual Public Interest Law Society Auction
April 6, 2018
Thurgood Marshall Gallery

The Public Interest Law Society (PILS) auction is a student-run event that raises money for outreach assistantships that will be awarded to innovative, enthusiastic and dedicated students at NIU College of Law who work in unpaid public interest legal positions.

Through their work these students aid underrepresented individuals who cannot afford legal services through conventional methods.  In the past students have worked with victims of domestic violence, immigrants and refugees, juveniles, those falsely accused of committing crimes and the homeless.

These outreach assistantships allow benefits to be experienced by both our students and the community. Our students receive valuable legal experience and clients receive legal assistance they desperately need.

We begin the event with a silent auction and then take hotly contested items to a live auction! We strongly encourage you to contribute to this great cause and help provide NIU College of Law students an opportunity to pursue their goal of working in the public interest.

Testimonials

"Because of the funds raised at the PILS Auction, I was able to dedicate my summer to working for the Cook County State's Attorney's office where I gained invaluable experience that contributed to my legal education."by Kelly McKay ('17)

"The scholarship I received from the Public Interest Law Society allowed me to achieve my goal of working in a State Attorney's office without the financial burden. As a result of receiving this scholarship, I dedicated 40 hours a week to my internship and gained invaluable legal skills, knowledge, and networking opportunities with attorneys. The Public Interest Law Society scholarship resulted in being offered a permanent position with the DeKalb County State Attorney's office."by Hayley Botts, 3L

"The prospect of receiving the PILS scholarship got me involved with the PILS auction which was a fun, collaborative and rewarding experience. More importantly, the scholarship enabled me to gain valuable experience outside of the classroom where I was able to serve my community and build a network of amazing attorneys who were truly passionate about their work. The scholarship helped ease some of the financial strains that come with being a law student; the doors that have opened for me because of this scholarship have been priceless."by Jessica Parsons ('17)
