NIU Law Hosts Annual Orientation Reception at Giorgi Clinic

The clinical faculty and staff hosted a reception for the incoming NIU Law Class of 2015 at the Zeke Giorgi Legal Clinic in Rockford on August 15, 2012.
Dean Jennifer Rosato welcomed the students and attendees and thanked the many local judges and officials who were in attendance. The attendees included Circuit Judge Rosemary Collins, Circuit Judge Eugene G. Doherty (NIU ’89), Circuit Judge Gwyn Gulley, Associate Judge J. Joseph Bruce, Associate Judge K. Patrick Yarborough (NIU ’88), Illinois State Representative Robert W. Pritchard, Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joseph Bruscato, and Northern District of Illinois Federal Public Defender Branch Chief Paul Gaziano. Dean Rosato also welcomed and thanked Barbara Vella, daughter of E.J. “Zeke” Giorgi for whom the clinic is named, as well as members of the Vella family in attendance, for their ongoing support and contributions to NIU.
Assistant Professor Anita Maddali, Director of Clinics, introduced Clinical Associate Professor Paul Cain, Clinical Assistant Professor Wendy Vaughn, and clinic receptionist Willa MacVenn to the students and attendees. Professor Maddali provided an overview of the College of Law’s Clinical Program, as well as other experiential learning opportunities for law students at NIU. Professor Maddali described the Civil Justice Clinic and the Juvenile Justice Clinics, two new clinical opportunities available at NIU College of Law which serve the Rockford community.
Members of the Class of 2015 had and an opportunity to speak with lawyers and judges about the practice of law, their expertise in a wide variety of practice areas, and their advice for succeeding during law school and in the legal profession. Clinical faculty took students on tours of the Zeke Giorgi Legal Clinic and provided information about the clinical courses.
