10th Annual Shining the Light on Domestic Violence

Rockford, Ill. – The Tenth Annual Shining the Light on Domestic Violence Ceremony took place on the evening of October 4, 2011. This event was hosted again this year by Northern Illinois University College of Law’s Zeke Giorgi Legal Clinic located in Rockford. The Honorable Judge Rosemary Collins, Chairperson of the 17th Judicial Circuit Court’s Family Violence Coordinating Council, presided over the ceremony. Members of the community honored those affected by all forms of family violence including intimate partner violence; elder abuse, neglect and exploitation; teen dating violence; and child abuse and neglect.

At the ceremony, Judge Collins announced that the federal Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women, has awarded the 17th Judicial Circuit with a grant of approximately $300,000 to create a new Domestic Violence Coordinated Court Division at the Winnebago County Courthouse. Clinical Assistant Professor Wendy Vaughn assisted the court in applying for this grant and will participate in the Planning Committee tasked with implementing the new dedicated civil and criminal domestic violence court plan.
