DeKalb, Ill. – Northern Illinois University alumna Karen Conti returned to NIU on April 17, 2014 where she shared her extensive experiences as a lawyer and national media correspondent on both television and radio. Conti’s presentation, “Why Lawyers Should Talk to the Media,” took place at the NIU College of Law and was designed to prepare and enhance the professional conduct of future and current lawyers should they ever find themselves in the media spotlight.

During her lecture, Conti touched on several important points including what lawyers need to know when talking to the press, whether or not press coverage benefits the client, and whether or not press coverage benefits the lawyer. She also showed media clips of specific examples where attorneys and clients represented themselves both well and poorly in front of the camera. However, throughout her message, Conti stressed the importance of being ethical in using the media professionally and responsibly while always keeping the client's interests at the forefront.

Conti received her BA degree in Political Science from Northern Illinois University and then went on to earn her J.D. degree from the University of Illinois College of Law. She is a litigation partner at Beermann, Pritikin, Mirabelli, Swerdlove LLP in Chicago, IL and has worked as a lawyer for 26 years. For 15 years, she has been the designated local Chicago Fox television affiliate legal expert giving weekly commentary on a wide range of legal issues and high-profile cases. She has appeared on Good Morning America, The O’Reilly Factor, The Montel Williams Show, America Now, and other television programs. For over 20 years, Ms. Conti has hosted and produced radio talk shows including “Legally Speaking” on WGN for which she has won numerous awards including Achievement in Radio for Best Public Affairs and the Kogan Award from the Chicago Bar Association.
