NIU Law Welcomes New Faculty Member: Robert L. Jones

DeKalb, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University College of Law is pleased to announce that Robert L. Jones has joined the full-time faculty as an assistant professor. He will teach Conflicts of Law, Evidence, Antitrust, and Trial Advocacy.

Professor Jones comes to NIU Law from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he taught in the clinical wing of UCLA School of Law from 2004 until 2007. In addition to teaching Lawyering Skills, he co-taught upper division clinical courses on depositions and trial advocacy. Professor Jones’ scholarship focuses on conflicts of law and civil procedure. His article, Finishing a Friendly Argument: The Jury and the Origins of Diversity Jurisdiction, 82 N.Y.U. L. Rev. 101 (forthcoming Oct. 2007), offers a new account for the historical origins of the lower federal courts.

Prior to teaching at the UCLA School of Law, Professor Jones practiced for four years as an associate in the antitrust group of the Washington, D.C. law firm of Arnold & Porter and interned with the Antitrust Division of the United States Department of Justice. His practice areas included federal and state litigation, agency investigations, and an administrative adjudication before the Federal Trade Commission. His pro bono work has included federal immigration litigation and teaching secondary students. Professor Jones also clerked for the Honorable Jack B. Weinstein in the Eastern District of New York.

Professor Jones received his J.D. from New York University School of Law in 1998 where he was an Articles Editor on the NYU Law Review, a teacher in the High School Law Institute, and a member of the Latino Law Students Association. He earned his bachelor’s degree in history from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a member of the California and District of Columbia bars.
