Northern Illinois University College of Law to Host Child Custody Law Symposium

DeKalb—The Northern Illinois University College of Law announces its 14 th Annual Law Review Symposium, “Current Issues in Child Custody Law,” to be held Thursday, March 24, 2005, from 8:45 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the Holmes Student Center in DeKalb, IL.
The Northern Illinois University Law Review has assembled a distinguished group of scholars to address and explore current issues in child custody law. This array of judges, professors, and family law attorneys will provide both theoretical and practical insight on some of the issues at the forefront of child custody jurisprudence.
Morning presentations include:
An Overview of ALI Principles on Shared Parenting by Professor Marygold Melli, University of Wisconsin Law School
Domestic Violence and the Danger of Joint Custody Presumptions by Professor Judith Greenberg, New England School of Law
Alternatives to the Best Interest Standard by Steven Peskind, Law Offices of Steven Peskind
Parental Rights for Non-Biological Lesbian Mothers by Professor Melanie Jacobs, Michigan State University College of Law
Professors Adele Morrison and Lawrence Schlam, both of NIU College of Law, will serve as commentators.
The luncheon keynote address, Anatomy of a Child Custody Case, will be presented by the Honorable Kathleen O. Kauffman, 15 th Judicial Circuit.
The afternoon panel discussion, Have Kids, Might Travel: A Guide to Successfully Litigating and Resolving Illinois Relocation Cases includes: Joseph DuCanto, Schiller, DuCanto and Fleck; Gunnar Gitlin, The Gitlin Law Firm; Steven Peskind; the Honorable Stephen Sullivan, 16 th Judicial Circuit; and Susan B. Tatnall, Law Offices of Susan B. Tatnall. The panel will be moderated by Professor Jeffrey Parness, NIU College of Law.
The symposium fee of $50 for General Attendees; $25 for NIU Faculty, Administration, and Staff; or $15 for Full-time students includes materials, lunch, and reception immediately following the symposium.
