American Bar Association President Robert J. Grey Urges Northern Illinois University Law Graduates to Protect Judicial Branch
June 06, 2005
DeKalb, IL – American Bar Association President Robert J. Grey delivered a powerful commencement message as he urged the NIU Law Class of 2005 to protect and strengthen what he referred to as the weakest branch of government, the judicial branch. Grey voiced his concerns regarding recent challenges of the justice system that he felt go beyond the pale of criticism saying, “When those critiques include threat and intimidation to our judiciary, when they talk about impeaching judges, limiting their jurisdiction, and cutting their funding because they make unpopular decisions, that is not America.”
He challenged the Class of 2005, as the next generation of the legal profession, to have hope and faith in our justice system, to inspire public trust and confidence in this system, and to rise to its defense. There were 102 Juris Doctor degrees conferred at the law school’s 28th annual commencement.
