Lawyer to Lawyer Mentor Program

The NIU College of Law has joined forces with the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism (ILSCCP) to become a program provider in its Lawyer to Lawyer Mentoring Program. The program was designed to elevate the competence, professionalism, and success of new lawyers and ease the transition from legal education to actual practice for recent law school graduates.

Qualifications

New Lawyers

New lawyers must complete the mentoring program during the first three years of the mentee’s practice in Illinois. In order to complete a one-year long program within the first three years of practice, the new lawyer must begin the program no later than two years after being admitted to the Illinois bar.

A new lawyer seeking to participate in the mentoring program and earn the professional responsibility credit must meet the following minimum standards: Be admitted to practice in Illinois no more than two years prior to the date of beginning the program; be registered on the Illinois ARDC Master Roll of Attorneys as active; and practice law in Illinois or intend to practice law in Illinois.

New lawyers must complete the online mentee registration.

Mentors

Mentors must be registered on the Illinois ARDC Master Roll of Attorneys as active and in good standing; be admitted to practice law in Illinois for not less than six years; and never have been suspended or disbarred from the practice of law in any state or jurisdiction and have no formal disciplinary complaint pending.

Mentors must complete and submit the online mentor registration.

Mandatory Program Orientation

Mentors and mentees are required to attend a mandatory program orientation. Please contact Greg Anderson, program administrator, with any questions.

Complete program details can be found on the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism website.
