Lakisha Sarden Scholarship Award for the Study of Civil Procedure Law

Established in 2007, the Lakisha Sarden Scholarship Award for the Study of Civil Procedure Law is named in memory of Lakisha Sarden.  Lakisha died at the age of 13 as a result of Sickle Cell Anemia and heart failure.  Tragically, medical oversight contributed to Lakisha's passing.  Her parents were clients of Kenneth C. Chessick, who represented them at trial.  A jury determined that Lakisha’s death was the result of negligent failure to diagnose and treat her disease.

As a result, this award is given yearly to a second-year student at the NIU College of Law who has excelled in the first-year Civil Procedure course and is able to articulate the impact of civil litigation in aiding the victims of medical negligence.
