Clinic Shines the Light on Domestic Violence

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the NIU College of Law’s Zeke Giorgi Legal Clinic hosted the 13th Annual Shining the Light on Domestic Violence event in Rockford, Illinois on October 1, 2014. As part of the event, the community celebrated the 20th anniversary of the 17th Judicial Circuit Court’s Family Violence Coordinating Council (FVCC) and the collaborative efforts of the FVCC to improve safety for survivors of family violence in the community.

Judge Rosemary Collins was honored for twenty years of service as the Chairperson of the FVCC and her work to protect the safety of victims and children, while holding perpetrators of abuse accountable. Diane Reed was presented with the Shining the Light on Domestic Violence Award for her tireless work on behalf of the Amanda Reed Memorial Foundation to raise awareness and increase attention to the prevention of domestic violence. The ceremony included music from local bagpiper Jackie Stephenson and Kantorei, The Singing Boys of Rockford, as well as a display of Rockford Sexual Assault, Inc.’s Clothesline Project and the FVCC’s Silhouette Project.

The NIU Law Clinical Program includes a civil justice clinic, housed at Zeke Giorgi, which defends domestic violence survivors as well as survivors of sexual assault and stalking & low-income senior citizens.
