Professor Wendy Vaughn and NIU Law Student Irakere Picon Engage Rockford's Latino Community

On Friday, October 17, 2014, Clinical Associate Professor Wendy Vaughn provided a presentation in Spanish to clients and staff of La Voz Latina. La Voz Latina provides educational and social programs for Rockford, IL’s Hispanic community. Professor Vaughn’s presentation focused on services available for domestic violence survivors for Latinos in Rockford. Professor Vaughn provided information and materials in Spanish to help La Voz Latina's clients identify issues of domestic violence, to engage in safety planning, and to obtain an order of protection when appropriate.

Then on Thursday, October 23, 2014, third-year NIU Law student Irakere Picon appeared on the Spanish language news program Eyewitness News en Español on WTVO-TV/WQRF-TV in Rockford. Irakere was interviewed live in Spanish by news anchor Carolina Cruz about the availability of free legal services at the NIU College of Law Zeke Giorgi Legal Clinic in Rockford. In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Irakere discussed the legal services provided by the NIU Law Civil Justice Clinic to domestic violence survivors and the availability of bilingual staff and students to represent Spanish-speaking clients. Irakere, who is currently participating in the Civil Justice Clinic, has already successfully represented several clients this semester, including two Spanish-speaking clients.
