Certificate Programs

Students in class taking part in the NIU Law certificate program.

The College of Law offers six Certificate Programs for students matriculating beginning in August 2011.

NIU is consistently recognized for its holistic approach to the training and development of successful lawyers through rigorous coursework, skills training, experiential clinics, externships, pro-bono opportunities and a full complement of specialized certificate programs.

Certificate programs, in particular, capitalize on our faculty expertise to enable students to focus on specialized areas of the law that have piqued their deepened interests and career pursuits. This focused training also heightens the student’s visibility amongst prospective employers in the particular field.

A list of general guidelines applies to all current NIU Law certificate programs except the Law & Women’s Studies Certificate.

Instructions for Certificate Applications

  1. Complete digital version of application (Download below; PDF files compatible with Internet Explorer and Google Chrome browsers. Others such as Mozilla Firefox may not function properly).
  2. Email digital version to
  3. Print hard copy of application, check that information is correct, then sign / date it.
  4. Give hard copy to supervising faculty member for review and signature:
    • Civil Advocacy - Professor David Taylor
    • Criminal Practice - Professor Daniel McConkie
    • Business Law - Professor Genevieve Tokic
    • International Law - Professor Morse Tan
    • Public Interest Law - Professor Michael Oswalt
    • Graduate Certificate in Law and Women's Studies - Professor Anita Maddali
  5. Associate Dean Marc Falkoff must also approve and sign all forms.
  6. When all approvals and signatures are acquired, turn hard copy form in to Julie Mahoney-Krzyzek (SP285).
  7. It is preferred that this process is completed by the time Statement of Candidacy meeting with Julie takes place. (October for December graduates; February for May graduates)
