Cherilyn G. Murer, JD, CRA, is President and CEO of Murer Consultants, Inc., a legal-based healthcare management consulting firm. Founded in 1985, Murer Consultants offers a wide range of consultative services, including the design and development of health facilities, regulatory compliance oversight, and reimbursement analysis for all venues of care. Understanding that healthcare is a complex integration of medical, social, economic, legal and government issues, the firm utilizes a unique combination of expertise to address operational challenges with pragmatic recommendations and strategies. Murer Consultants has established relationships with more than 600 clients in 42 U.S. states and a number of foreign nations, including Canada, the Netherlands and Belgium.
Ms. Murer currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Northern Illinois University. Since her initial gubernatorial appointment to the board in 2005, Ms. Murer has applied her academic and professional experiences in service to the university and the board serving in key leadership roles including the chair of the Board of Trustees in 2007-2009 and then again in 2011-2013 after her re-election. Ms. Murer continues to play a critical role on the board, serving as a member of the Executive Committee, as the chair of the Committee on Legislative Affairs, Research, and Innovation, and as the newly-elected chair of the Committee on Compliance, Audit, Risk Management, and Legal Affairs. In 2015 Ms. Murer stated, “I look forward to serving as chair of these two synergistic committees with focus on the future through innovation and research while assuring the University has effective day to day operational policies and accountability structures to meet compliance and regulatory mandates.”
Over the last 25 years, Cherilyn Murer has distinguished herself as an active voice in the advancement of quality, cost-effective healthcare. Ms. Murer received a juris doctor with honors from Northern Illinois University College of Law and has coupled her background in law with her previous operational experience as the director of Rehabilitation Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Ms. Murer is a lecturer and educator whose focus is on helping her clients navigate through the complex regulatory, strategic and financial issues facing healthcare providers today. In February 2010, Ms. Murer was inducted into the Chicago Entrepreneurial Hall of Fame and in April 2010 she received the Northern Illinois University Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award.
Ms. Murer has co-authored six books on a variety of healthcare topics, including effective case management, post-acute care reimbursement, provider-based status, compliance audits and medical records management. A seventh book, Clinical Co-Management: A Bridge to Clinical Integration and Pathway to Bundled Payments, will be published in August 2015 with foreword by Mark D. Birdwhistell, former secretary for Health & Family Services, Commonwealth of Kentucky, who also serves as the vice president for Administration & External Affairs at the University of Kentucky.
Ms. Murer has also been honored by American Express; recognized for her leadership and outstanding accomplishments. American Express described Ms. Murer as “a healthcare pioneer who has been a leader in helping health care providers find cost effective procedures without reducing the quality of care.”
