How did NIU Law make you practice-ready? Upon graduation, I joined the Procter & Gamble Co. Later, I joined Caterpillar Inc., where I have been for the past 25 years. To be an effective corporate lawyer, you must be able to provide practical legal advice that is based on an educated balance of legal risks and business benefits. A corporate lawyer must also be effective at developing relationships with internal clients. NIU Law gave me an outstanding legal education, including the critical thought processes for working through and resolving legal issues. Equally importantly, my professors and our classroom interaction imparted to me the ability to develop positive working relationships with my internal clients. Negotiation is another critical skill for a corporate lawyer because much of our lawyering is done through interactions with customers, suppliers, opposing litigants, and government agencies. My colleagues and clients have always considered me to be a top-notch negotiator. I attribute this skill to NIU Law.

What was the best thing about your time at NIU Law? The most memorable and extraordinary thing I remember about NIU Law was how I was, from day one, welcomed into the law school community. I was immediately made to feel that I was part of a family that was going to do everything in its power to ensure my success. Everyone is interested in the welfare of everyone else and the success of one is felt to be the success of all. It sounds like a fantasy, but it’s true. NIU Law is a place where students learn through the example of the administration, the faculty, and upperclassmen that humanizing the study of law maximizes intellectual excitement.
