What do you feel is special about NIU Law? NIU Law is unique because it prepares students to be practicing lawyers. Even when I was in school (1991-1994), NIU Law was a leader in its practice skills courses and externship opportunities. After graduation, I began working alongside graduates from the top-ranked law schools in the country, but I felt more prepared to practice law.

NIU Law provides opportunities for students to network with alumni and other professionals. I have been on panel discussions, worked with students on law school related projects, and am a mentor in the NIU Law student mentoring program. More than anything, I enjoy meeting the students through these events.

How did NIU Law help you achieve your goals? The decision to go to law school should be a cost-benefit analysis. For me, NIU College of Law provided value. NIU is affordable and it has a favorable student/professor ratio which allows dedicated professors to provide personal attention to students. NIU’s emphasis on practice skills also provides students with opportunities to learn not only how to understand the law, but also how to apply it.

What do you find the most rewarding about your work? English poet William Cowper once wrote “variety is the spice of life that gives it all its flavor.” Practicing law is very spicy.

Do you have any advice for future attorneys? My advice is to get involved and to stay in touch. Every successful attorney builds a network of friends and colleagues. Start building this network right now, with your college and law school friends, classmates, and other contacts. Someday, they may be your clients or referral sources.
