Janet A. Pioli is a shareholder in Brinks Gilson & Lione's Chicago office. Her intellectual property law practice encompasses strategic counseling involving large patent and application portfolios in a variety of disciplines, patent clearance and due diligence, patent prosecution supervision, litigation, and advertising review and clearance. Ms. Pioli has a large and growing practice of appeals before the U.S. Patent Office Patent Appeals Board and the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, including oral arguments before both. Her practice also includes pro bono appeals to obtain disability benefits for United States veterans.

Clients and jurists recognize Ms. Pioli’s ability to ethically and thoroughly represent clients in what they seek to accomplish. One jurist from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois recently remarked “she is as conscientious a person in working for her clients as any lawyer I know.”  One large medical device company director describes Ms. Pioli as “an incredibly thorough and persistent patent attorney,” who is “extremely knowledgeable and unbelievably tenacious in her ability to monitor [our] field and provide guidance as we pursue intellectual property in this area.”

Her areas of focus in the patent field include the medical arts, chemical and environmental products and processes. A non-technical aspect of her practice includes advertising review, clearance and enforcement in a variety of disciplines, including financial services, personal care products, nutritional supplements, food and beverage products, automotive transmissions, and funeral products.

Ms. Pioli also provides leadership in the IP community. She is the immediate past president of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago, the oldest and one of the largest intellectual property law associations in the country, and is an international delegate from the Licensing Executive Society, USA-Canada to that society’s international branch. For the past five years, Ms. Pioli has been a contributing author of Claim Construction in the Federal Circuit, a West publication.

She received her J.D., cum laude, from Northern Illinois University College of Law in 1984; did Graduate Studies in Molecular Biology & Biotechnology at Illinois Institute of Technology ending in 1992; and received her B.S. in Political Science from Illinois State University in 1981.
