Graduate Funding Opportunities

NIU provides tuition waivers as defined by university policy and state regulations. The Graduate School administers a series of competitively-awarded waiver programs. Generally, for each of the waivers listed below, three competitions per year are held. Two competitions are held in spring (for students enrolling in the following fall); one competition is held in fall (for students enrolling in the following spring).

Graduate assistantships provide degree-seeking students an opportunity to engage in important mentored research, teaching or service while enrolled full-time. Typically, graduate assistants perform assigned duties in their home department, but assistantships may be available in administrative units on campus, too.

The Graduate School offers a number of fellowships, all of which are competitively awarded. Fellows are billed tuition at the in-state rate. They receive a stipend and a waiver of over 70 percent of base-rate tuition.
