Faculty Associate News

Leila Porter recently helped to teach a course for Bolivian and Peruvian students called “Ecología y Conservación de los Primates en Bolivia” from May 21st -June 3rd, 2017.  The course was held at the Universidad Mayor San Andres and the Zoológico Vesti Pakos Sofro in La Paz, Bolivia.  The class was organized by the Colección Boliviana de Fauna, and was funded by a grant Leila received from the Primate Action Fund (part of the Margot Marsh Biodiversity Fund and Conservation International).

Leila and her colleagues also received two grants from the Endangered Species Fund of the Chicago Board of Trade - Chicago Zoological Society, and the Conservation Fund of the International Primatological Society.  The grants helped fund a project which aims to investigate the genetic diversity of the smallest monkeys in the world, the pygmy marmosets (Cebuella pygmaea), in Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. Leila is working with Peruvian and Ecuadorian colleagues as well as geneticists at the University of Texas and the University of Michigan on this research.
