Mounting Your Home Directory on a Macintosh Computer in an ITS Computing Lab

This procedure is for mounting your NIU Home Directory (HD) to a NIU computer lab using Macintosh computers with OS X.x. The first step in mounting your HD is obtaining the server name where your HD is located. This can be done by using the “Home Directory Location Lookup” utility located at: www.students.niu.edu/provisioning. Your HD location will not change. Therefore, if you remember what it is, you do not need to look it up each time you wish to mount it to your computer.

After you have your HD server name:

  1. Log into network through the Prosoft Novell client
  2. Click on the Browse tab
  3. Click on the “World” icon
  4. Click on NIU
  5. Click on NIU
  6. Click on Students (scroll down if necessary)
  7. Select the Server (the server name you obtained from the “Home Directory Lookup” utility)
  8. Click on the Mount button
  9. An icon representing the user volume will appear on the Desktop
  10. Double click on the user volume icon
  11. Double Click on the Folder in the window that appears (there will be a number under the Folder)
  12. Double Click on the Folder that has your Z-ID under it
  13. The files and folders associated with your Home Directory are now available to you

If you use the same workstation in the future (and it has not been re-imaged) your HD may still be available to you. After logging into the Prosoft Novell client, click on the Mount tab. If your HD is listed, you may select it and Click on the Mount button. This information is stored on the workstation and will not move with you if you log into a different workstation.
