GroupWise

Retiree Email

Every employee who is classified as being retired from the University gets a GroupWise retiree mailbox. It is free for 1 year after retirement date. After that, the annual renewal of the GroupWise retiree mailbox requires membership in the NIU Annuitants Association.

Request a Retiree GroupWise Account

A request can be made once your paperwork has been processed with the University. This request can be as early as two months before your retirement date.

  1. Go to itsforms.niu.edu > Email
  2. Select GroupWise Retiree Account and then Continue
  3. All information is required unless marked Optional. Click "Next."
  4. Review your request, then click "Submit."
  5. You can print a copy for your records.
  6. An information packet will be sent to your home address.

Your Retiree Mailbox

Mailbox Content

Your work mailbox content, including mail, appointments, tasks, notes, proxy access, resource mailbox ownership, and address books, will not transfer to your retiree mailbox.

The Helpdesk will be glad to help you retrieve emails and addresses and forward email to a different mailbox. Please allow sufficient time for this.

Get your retiree GroupWise email, calendars, and contacts on your mobile device (excluding Blackberry®) in real time with Mobility Connector.

Mailbox Address

Your retiree mailbox has a different address

In the GroupWise Address Book your status under "Department" will change to Retiree.

Keep Your GroupWise Retiree Account Active

GroupWise retiree accounts are free for 1 year after retirement date. After that, the annual renewal of an account requires membership in the NIU Annuitants Association. Renewal of your account will be on July 1 each year.

  • If membership dues are delinquent, the mailbox will be expired for 30 days
  • If membership dues remain unpaid at the end of this period, the mailbox and its contents may be deleted

Your Work Mailbox Will be Deleted

After you retire, mail to your work mail address will continue to go to your work mailbox, not your retiree mailbox.

Your work mailbox will be available for 180 days after retirement or May 1, whichever is sooner, after which it will be deleted
