Setting CanIt to Allow Mailing List Mail
Since mailing list messages often have some properties of mass-generated spam, they might be blocked.
Add the host for mailing list to your Permit List in CanIt Pro.
The mailing list host is the computer that distributes the mail.
- Host Name
- Open a message from the mailing list

- The address in the From: field is the e-mail address of the mailing list. Note: for some lists, the address will appear in the To: field and the original sender will be listed in the From: field.
- Everything after the "@" symbol is the host name. Save this host name.
-
- Select the Windows Start button.
- Select Run...
- Type cmd in the Open box. A command prompt window will open.
- At the C:\> prompt, type "nslookup [Your mailing list host name]" and press Enter.
- Save this address.

Add the IP Address to the CanIt Permit List
- Log in to CanIt with your AccountID and password at http://www.canspam.niu.edu .
- For those who use the Simplified Interface select Permit lists, Block lists, etc. Advanced Interface users of CanIt can skip this step.
- Select Rules.
- Select Hosts.
- Enter a specific IP address: the IP address for the mailing list host. Select Add Rule.
- In the picklist for Action, select Always Allow. Add the host name in the Comment field so this rule is easy to identify in the future. Select Submit Changes.
- Log Out.
Once the IP address of the mailing list host has been added, all mail coming from that host will not be scanned by CanIt. This means that if there is more than one mailing list from the same list host, the listserv host needs to be added to the permit list once.
