CanIt-Pro Spam Mitigation Software at NIU

CanIt-Pro software is installed at the NIU e-mail gateway.  CanIt-Pro uses many sophisticated rules and mechanisms to detect spam messages.  CanIt-Pro assigns each scanned message a Spam Score based on the content of the e-mail message.  The message is then handled according to the options for that e-mail account.

All scanning is completed by the CanIt-Pro software; there is no human intervention involved in the normal spam scanning of your e-mail messages.

Spam scanning is not 100% effective.  Some unwanted spam messages may be delivered to you, and some legitimate messages may be identified as spam and rejected.  If you consistently receive spam from a specific source, you can set up a personal block list to reject messages from specific senders or domains.  Likewise, if you have a specific sender or domain that you want to ensure will never be blocked, you can add their address or domain to your personal permit list.  You also have the option to use the advanced controls with Spam Trap to "trap" suspected spam messages outside the NIU network.

For more information on the different spam scanning options, see the CanIt-Pro Spam Scanning Options page.

Participating E-Mail Servers

Currently, all messages sent to your GroupWise or student NetMail account are scanned for viruses and spam.  This includes all messages that are sent to your e-mail alias (alias@niu.edu) when it points to your GroupWise or student account.  Departmental e-mail servers do not currently participate in enterprise spam scanning. Check with your department for options on their servers.

Note: all messages sent to your alias (alias@niu.edu) are scanned for virus content and enterprise rules are enforced regardless of where the alias points.
