GroupWise Retiree Accounts

A Retiree Account includes a GroupWise e-mail account and access to the NIU network. It is available to any employee who is classified as being retired from the University. Initial acounts are free for 1 year after retirement date. After that, the annual renewal of an account requires membership in the NIU Annuitants Association.

Request a Retiree Account

A request can be made once your paperwork has been processed with the University. This request can be as early as two months before your retirement date.

  1. Go to itsforms.niu.edu > E-Mail Resources
  2. Select GroupWise Retiree Account and then Continue
  3. All information is required unless marked Optional. Click "Next."
  4. Review your request, then click "Submit."
  5. Your request has now been submitted. You can print a copy for your records.
  6. An information packet will be sent to your home address. 

Your Retiree Account

  • Mailbox Content: Your current mailbox content, which includes mail, appointments, tasks, notes, and address books will not transfer to your retiree mailbox.
    You can copy your work address books to your retiree mailbox.
    You can forward e-mail from your work mailbox to your retiree mailbox.

  • Access Rights: Proxy access and Resource Mailbox ownership will not transfer to your Retiree Account.

  • Account Status: In the GroupWise Address Book your status under "Department" will change to Retiree.

  • Address: Your retiree account will have a new GroupWise mailbox created for it, so your retiree mailbox has a different address. Your previous e-mail address will still exist as long as your work account exists.

Keep Your Retiree Account Active

GroupWise retiree accounts are free for 1 year after retirement date. After that, the annual renewal of an account requires membership in the NIU Annuitants Association. Renewal of your account will be on July 1 each year.

  • If membership dues are delinquent, the mailbox will be expired for 30 days
  • If membership dues remain unpaid at the end of this period, the mailbox and its contents may be deleted

Your Work Account

After you retire, mail to your work mail address will continue to go to your work mailbox, not your retiree mailbox.

Your work mailbox will be available for 210 days after retirement, after which it will be deleted. Any information you need from your work mailbox must be retrieved or transferred by you before the 210 day deletion deadline. The Help Desk will be glad to assist you in retrieving desired e-mails and addresses or forwarding them to a different e-mail account, but please allow sufficient time for this.

Your NIU AccountID (not your GroupWise mailbox, see above) will remain active for 210 days from retirement or until May 1 of the year following your retirement, whichever comes last.
