Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, U.S.A,)
in partnership with the
FILIPINO FOUNDATION, INC.
will conduct the
13th Philippine Youth Leadership Program:
Engaging Young Advocates in Environmental Preservation & Peacebuilding.

A four-week U.S.-based exchange program on responsible citizenship, community service leadership and action plan development from:

April 9-May 6, 2014

PYLP13 will bring to NIU 24 secondary school students and four adult leaders from diverse spectrums (ethnic, religious, geographic) of the autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao and surrounding areas to participate in an intensive four-week U.S. exchange program from April 9 to May 6, 2016. focusing on the central theme of civic education, leadership development, respect for diversity and community engagement. The sub-themes will be environmental awareness and peacebuilding, recognizing that the Muslim, Christian and indigenous youth of Mindanao are centrally important to building a new future for this conflict-torn area of the Philippines.

PYLP 13 will focus on creating a cadre of leaders with strong sense of civic responsibility and commitment to community development, with specific understanding of global importance of environmental advocacy and the role of youth as agents of ecological change. This proposed program not only provides new knowledge and experience to the 28 participants but also prepares them for a lifetime of leadership and community service in Mindanao. The exchange program will take place in DeKalb, the Chicago area and in Washington, D.C.

Criteria for youth participants:

  1. Demonstrated leadership skills; must be at least 15 years old and not more than 17 years old by April 9, 2016
  2. Active in community service and in outreach or related activities
  3. Good academic performance;
  4. Will attend the program's Follow-on Activities;
  5. Can speak, read and write in English;
  6. Character references and letter of institutional endorsement and support; and
  7. No previous significant travel to the U.S. on a U.S. government-sponsored program.

Criteria for adult participants:

Preferably high school teachers, administrators and/or NGO or community leaders working with the youth, have demonstrated interest in environmental advocacy, and who are not over 35 years old by April 9, 2016.

  1. Active in environment-related activities or community outreach projects;
  2. Active in projects related to training youth to be responsible citizens
  3. Will attend the program's Follow-on Activities;
  4. Good English language skills;
  5. Character references and letter of institutional endorsement and support; and
  6. No previous significant travel to the U.S. on a U.S. government-sponsored program.
