Transfer Requirements

Students Coming From a University Outside the US

Students with transfer credit from a foreign university:

Students coming from another University will have their credentials evaluated by an International Admissions staff member. NIU will do its best to appropriately transfer needed classes but does not guarantee the student will transfer into NIU at the same level the student left his/her previous college. Students must also:

  • Be in good standing at the last attended school.
  • Have at least a "C+" grade point average (2.5 on a 4.00 scale) from all colleges attended (as computed by NIU standards).

Students with a bachelor's degree from another country:

If a student is found to have an degree equivalent to a U.S. Bachelor Degree, then the student will enter NIU with all the Core Requirements considered complete. Students must also:

  • Be in good standing at the last attended school.
  • Have at least a "C" grade point average (2.00 on a 4.00 scale) from all colleges attended (as computed by NIU standards).
  • *The above benefits do not necessarily satisfy any additional course requirements that may be needed for a specific major program at NIU

Students Coming from a U.S. University

Applicants who have less than 24 credit hours from another US college must:

  • Meet current freshman admission criteria.
  • Be in good standing at the last college attended.
  • Have a GPA of at least a C+ (2.5 on a 4.00 scale) from all colleges attended (as computed by NIU standards).

Applicants who have taken more than 24 credit hours from another US college must:

  • Have at least a C+ grade point average (2.5 on a 4.00 scale) from all colleges attended (as computed by NIU standards).
  • Be in good standing at the last college attended.

Illinois Public Community College Graduates: 

A graduate of an Illinois public community college who has not previously attended Northern will be admitted to NIU with junior standing. All NIU general education requirements will be considered complete if the student has the following qualifications prior to enrolling at NIU: 

  • An associate's degree (A.A. or A.S.) in a baccalaureate-oriented program. Applied science degrees (A.A.S.) do not meet this requirement.
  • At least a "C+" average (2.5 on a 4.00 scale) as calculated by the community college.
  • At least 60 semester hours of credit.
  • Be in good standing at the last college attended.
