Transfer Students

Transfer Students will need to submit the following to be considered for Admission to NIU:

1. A completed NIU Application. Students have the choice of sending in a Paper Application or Applying Online. We highly encourage you to use the online application.

2. A $40 application fee. This is a processing fee that is charged every time a student applies. It is important that when you submit the online application, you must be able to submit the payment online (Visa/MasterCard). If this is not possible, you will have to send in an international bank draft. Applications without the accompanying application fee will not be processed.  

3. Final Secondary School Transcript and/or Exam Results.
These documents must be Official Originals or Attested Copies. Please submit the documents in their Original Language and also provide an Official English Translation.

4. Official or Attested Transcripts of ALL your University work. This includes all post-secondary schools you have enrolled in. Please submit the documents in their Original Language and also provide an Official English Translation.

Academic Criteria
Students transferring from a University outside of the U.S.:

Students Coming from a U.S. University

Applicants who have less than 24 credit hours from another US college must:

  • Meet current freshman admission criteria.
  • Be in good standing at the last college attended.
  • Have a GPA of at least a C+ (2.5 on a 4.00 scale) from all colleges attended (as computed by NIU standards).

Applicants who have taken more than 24 credit hours from another US college must:

  • Have at least a C+ grade point average (2.5 on a 4.00 scale) from all colleges attended (as computed by NIU standards).
  • Be in good standing at the last college attended.

Illinois Public Community College Graduates: 

A graduate of an Illinois public community college who has not previously attended Northern will be admitted to NIU with junior standing. All NIU general education requirements will be considered complete if the student has the following qualifications prior to enrolling at NIU: 

  • An associate's degree (A.A. or A.S.) in a baccalaureate-oriented program. Applied science degrees (A.A.S.) do not meet this requirement.
  • At least a "C+" average (2.5 on a 4.00 scale) as calculated by the community college.
  • At least 60 semester hours of credit.
  • Be in good standing at the last college attended.

5. Proof of English Ability. Students enrolling at NIU must first prove they can communicate in English at a university level. The following will be considered as adequate proof of English proficiency.

Official TOEFL score report
To be considered for Admission, a student must have at least a:

  • 527 on a Paper-based Test, or
  • 71 on an Internet-based Test

For the TOEFL, use the institution code 1559.

Official IELTS score report
To be considered for admission, a student must have at least a:

  • 6.0 on the IELTS test

ELS level 112 Certificate
To be considered for admission, a student must have successfully completed the ELS English for Academic Purposes Level 112. More information about enrolling in an ELS institution can be found on their website: (www.els.edu) 

 

High School diploma from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, or Australia.

  • Students will need to submit an official school records

Official transcripts from an accredited U.S. University/College

  • Students will need to submit transcripts, showing they have passed two University-level English courses
