Students with 3 year Bachelor degrees (non-Bologna degrees)

In order to receive a Bachelor degree from a US school, you are usually required to complete “general education courses”

NIU requires the following subjects to complete the General Education Requirements:

  • 2 English courses
  • 1 Speech course
  • 1 Math course
  • 3-4 courses in Humanities and Arts
  • 2-3 courses in Sciences and mathematics
  • 2-3 courses in Social Sciences
  • 1-2 courses in Interdisciplinary studies

Total: 12 - 16 required courses
The average student will take 4 classes a semester. This means it will take 3-4 semesters (1.5 - 2 years) to finish the general education courses.

A more detail description of NIU requirements and accepted course can be found at the following website.

It is important to understand that even though a student finished three years of study at another University, it does not mean they will receive an NIU degree in one year. Students that were not previously required to take general education courses will have 1.5 - 2 years of courses to complete PLUS any other requirements from their department. Students should prepare for this both financially and academically before they attend NIU.
