Meet the New Executive Director of Econ Illinois

Lori Berkes-Nelson has joined NIU-based Econ Illinois as President/ Executive Director. Berkes-Nelson comes from the Golden Apple Foundation of Rockford, where her effective leadership as Executive Director expanded the program and increased donor and volunteer participation significantly during her 11-year tenure. Prior to her leadership of the Foundation, she served for eight years as Administrator of Rosecrance Healthcare Network in Rockford.
Berkes-Nelson holds a Master of Science in Counselor Education from Northern Illinois University and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a Spanish Minor, also from NIU. She is a native of DeKalb and currently lives with her husband in Loves Park, Illinois.
Berkes-Nelson succeeds Joanne Dempsey, who retired June 30 after 17 years as Executive Director of Econ Illinois and 35 years in the Illinois and national economic education network.
Econ Illinois (Illinois Council on Economic Education) is part of the Division of Outreach, Engagement and Information Technologies at Northern Illinois University. It is the premier provider of economic education programs for Illinois schools, offering teacher inservice education and student programs K-12 for more than 60 years. Econ Illinois works through seven university-based Centers for Economic Education throughout the state, and is part of the national Council for Economic Education network of state councils and centers for economic education.
