Illinois Capitol Challenge

Illinois Capitol Challenge (ICC) is offered every fall, matching state legislators and others to SMG schools. The program is funded by Citigroup Foundation.

Students compete in their usual SMG region, for prizes and recognition - and also compete with other ICC teams in a separate pull-out of the SMG.

At the end of the fall session, teachers of the top three teams in each of two divisions, elementary and high school, win cash awards; the top teams win a trip to Springfield, the second and third place teams win certificates of award. Legislative sponsors visit their schools to learn how the students are managing their SMG portfolios, and better understand the teaching/learning process.

Every fall, teachers who register for The Stock Market Game, and whose State Senator or Representative has registered for Illinois Capitol Challenge, are invited to identify two student teams to be "sponsored" (in name only) by that legislator. Teachers or legislators with any questions should contact Econ Illinois.

Ten Illinois Senators and 46 Illinois State Representatives are sponsoring student teams from 27 schools this fall. Teachers invited to participate have enrolled students in one of four fall SMG sessions, depending on the teaching and course schedule and calendar.

Invited teachers were asked to identify "Super Teams" from their SMG participants - teams that would compete on behalf of the school for the ICC awards. These Super Teams are not only competing in the Illinois Capitol Challenge, but are also competing within a specific SMG game window, by geographical region or grade-level division. Thus, the teams are eligible for two different awards using the same investment portfolio.

The ICC competition will conclude with the rankings as of the close of markets on Friday, December 11. Winners will be announced the following week. Award presentations will take place in January and February.
